MDPI Open Insights— – Academic Publishing Workshop at High Performance Sport Institute, 8 October 2026

On 8 October 2026, MDPI conducted the second part of its two-part Academic Publishing Workshop (APW) series in collaboration with the High Performance Sport Institute (HPSI) and the Editorial Office of the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology (JFMK). The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of academic publishing practices, research integrity, and the responsible use of emerging technologies in scholarly communication.

The session began with a welcome address by Dr. Chee Yong Low, Head of Sport Science and Sport Medicine at HPSI, who welcomed participants and introduced the objectives of the workshop. Mr. Han Siong Lim, Section Managing Editor of JFMK, then officially commenced the workshop with an introduction to MDPI, the principles of open access publishing, and the journal’s scope and role in supporting research in functional morphology and kinesiology.

The workshop continued with two sessions addressing important considerations in academic publishing. Dr. Steven Moay delivered a session on Publication Ethics, highlighting the importance of maintaining research integrity and ethical standards throughout the research and publication process. The session covered key considerations for researchers, including responsible publication practices and the importance of upholding transparency and accountability in scholarly work.

This was followed by Dr. Nicolette Yau, who presented on Artificial Intelligence in Academic Publishing. Her session explored the growing role of AI tools in research and scholarly communication, discussing their potential applications as well as the ethical considerations surrounding their use. Participants were introduced to the importance of using AI responsibly while ensuring that human oversight, transparency, and academic integrity remain central to the research and writing process.
Through these sessions, participants gained insights into both the fundamental principles of responsible publishing and the emerging challenges associated with technological developments in academia. The discussions also reinforced the importance of making informed decisions when preparing and submitting research for publication.

This collaborative initiative reflects MDPI’s continued commitment to supporting researchers through academic publishing education and knowledge-sharing opportunities. By concluding the two-part APW series with HPSI, MDPI hopes to contribute to greater awareness of open access publishing, research integrity, and the responsible adoption of AI in scholarly communication.
